Thirsty Thursday - Puerto Rican Painkiller

(You know you wanna be here right now...)

Kelly with his PRP in hand.

Kelly and I went to the East Coast Hawaii a few years back to celebrate a few big milestones. The East Coast Hawaii is Puerto Rico, which is a US territory and therefore you need no passports or change of currency upon arrival. It is easy breezy to get there...if you live on the East Coast. I have lots of family in Florida so it was a great excuse to go see Grandma whom I rarely get to see, and then move on to sun and fun and rainforest.

Before our trip we learned about a tropical drink famous in the Caribbean isles called the "Painkiller." But when we ordered one at the swim-up bar of our fabulous resort hotel, the bartender had no idea what it was! So my husband, the ex-bartender, guided him in making his first Painkiller and together the two morphed the recipe into the new "Puerto Rican Painkiller" still famous today at that resort (probably not, but I like to think it still gets made today for guests wanting a fun Caribbean beverage).

Puerto Rico is called the Rum Capital of the World and NOT just because the Bacardi distillery is perched there. If you ask a local, they'll point you to the lesser known rums like Don Q and Ron del Barrilito. Excellent rum! So if you go, you can't leave without packing out a few bottles of the good stuff, best for making this fabulous drink recipe:

Puerto Rican Painkiller

The key is making it in a mixer with ice 3/4 full.

One shot light rum (4 count)
Squirt of Coco Lopez
Glass half filled with pineapple juice
Top with 7-up

Shake and pour all contents (ice included) into a pounder. Enjoy!

  6. I love the photos for this post, and yes, I DO want to be there right now! Well, except that we're heading to your neck of the woods this afternoon, so maybe next trip! These sound yummy - I'm going to bring the recipe and see if the flight attendants on AA will mix a few up for Rob and I. Maggie can have a virgin one. ;)
